I Will Praise You with My Whole Heart
1-5, David Praises God for Answering Prayer 6-8, The Lord's Condescension and Care for His People
(138:1) I will praise You with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing praises to You.
Psalm 138 begins with David promising praise (138:1–2a) and ends with him telling of his confidence in Yahweh (138:7–8). The second and second-to-last statements exposit Yahweh’s name and character: he is the one whose name communicates steadfast love and truth (138:2b), and he is the exalted one who sees the lowly but regards the lofty from a distance (138:6). At the center of Ps 138 David declares the fulfillment of Ps 2: Yahweh emboldens and strengthens David (138:3), and he is so great that the rebellious kings will praise him (138:4–5).
