Betrayal by a Friend
1-8, David in his prayer complains of his fearful case. 9-15, He prays against his enemies, of whose wickedness and treachery he complains. 16-23, He comforts himself in God's preservation of him, and confusion of his enemies.
(55:22) Cast your burden on the LORD, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. (55:1) Give ear to my prayer, O God, and do not hide Yourself from my supplication.
Contain themes of betrayal, suffering, and vindication which foreshadow Christ. Psalm 55 features a chiastic structure emphasizing betrayal, fear, and faith. It includes sections on terrified prayer, betrayed trust, and steadfast confidence. David expresses his fear of unrepentant adversaries while maintaining faith that God will deliver justice and respond to his prayers.
