Abiding in the Shadow of the Almighty
1-8, The safety of those who have God for their refuge. 9-16, Their happiness.
(91:1) He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalm 91 features a structured dialogue where the psalmist speaks in first-person and second-person, addressing an individual who takes refuge in Yahweh. The psalm is divided into four units: 1–2, 3–8, 9–13, and 14–16. Each central section follows a progression: asserting refuge in Yahweh, detailing deliverance from danger, and concluding with the promise of victory. The figure described is interpreted as a future king from David's line, symbolizing a model for God's people. The chiastic structure emphasizes the themes of refuge, deliverance, and victory, culminating in Yahweh's commitment to deliver and glorify this individual.
