A Prayer for Guidance and Protection
1-3, David prays, and professes his study in prayer. 4-6, God favours not the wicked. 7-9, David, professing his faith, prays to God to guide him; 10, to destroy his enemies; 11-12, and to preserve the godly.
(5:8) Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before my face. (5:1) Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.
Psalm 5 begins with a plea for Yahweh to hear the psalmist. It consists of two main sections, each starting with "O Yahweh" and providing reasons for divine attention. The psalm contrasts the abundance of steadfast love with the abundance of transgressions, concluding with confidence in the reception of the righteous. It ends with an assertion that Yahweh will bless the individual righteous man.
