Theme

Oppressed by the Wicked But Rejoicing in the LORD

Outline

1-6, David prays for deliverance, complaining of his enemies. 7-10, He promises himself to see such an evident destruction of his enemies, as the righteous shall rejoice at it.

Key Verse

(64:10) The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory. (64:1) Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation; preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

Notes

In this psalm David cries out to the Lord to hear him, confident that God will hide him from the wicked plots of those who would shoot him with their words (64:1–4). He then explains that these wicked schemers have thoroughly investigated injustice and set out their snares (64:5–6). What they do not expect is for God to bring their injustice and wickedness back on their own heads, which he will do, bringing on them what they have plotted for others (64:7–8). People will see God’s justice and ponder it, and the righteous will exult in Yahweh (64:9–10).
