The Majesty of God in Judgment
1-3, God Known in Zion 4-6, Radiant Warrior 7-10, Awful Judge 11-12, God Fearsome to Foreign Kings
(76:1–2) In Judah God is known; His name is great in Israel. In Salem also is His tabernacle, and His dwelling place in Zion.
The first three verses of Ps 76 affirm that God is known among his people with five different references to the place he chose to set his name: Judah, Israel, Salem, Zion, and “there” (76:1–3). The psalmist addresses God as the one who comes as a radiant warrior (76:4–6) then as the awful judge (76:7–10). Just as the psalm opens by stating that God is known among his people, it closes with commands to foreign nations, who will bring tribute to the fearsome one (76:11–12).
